Player Injury Procedure


Outlined below is the procedure that must be followed by or on behalf of all registered Blarney GAA players that require medical intervention for injuries.


PROCEDURE THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED FOR REPORTING AN INJURY RECEIVED DURING A MATCH OR TRAINING SESSION

(A) If a player gets injured during the course of a game (Challenge, League or Championship) the injury must be reported by the team manager to the referee before he leaves the grounds in order to ensure that the incident is recorded and included in the official match report. The referees report will require - the injured players name, date and time of injury, name of opposing team and the venue where injury occurred.

Failure to supply complete information will result in delay in processing injury claim.

(B) If a player receives an injury during training the incident must be reported by the team manager to the appropriate Chairman (adult or underage)


PROCEDURE THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED FOR AN INJURED PLAYER REQUIRING IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION

If a person is in need of immediate medical attention, the team manager must first phone their appropriate chairman (Adult or Underage) or alternatively the Medical Claims Officer (Tadhg Hurley) who will immediately contact Dr. John O'Riordan the club's doctor and a specialist in sports injuries.

Dr. O'Riordan will attend to the patient at his surgery in Tower or alternatively recommend a visit to an appropriate Medical Institution (Cork University Hospital, Mercy Urgent Care Centre, The Mercy Injury Unit and Mallow Injury Unit, etc.).

Please note that the injured party must attend that hospital specified by Dr.O'Riordan.

N.B. If Dr. O'Riordan is unavailable the chairman and team manager will determine where the injured party is directed for treatment.


PROCEDURE FOR PLAYERS REQUIRING PHYSIOTHERAPY (Applicable to adult players only)

If the club doctor refers an injured player for Physiotherapy, the player must attend Mr. Declan O'Sullivan, Consultant Suites, Affidea, The Elysian, Eglington Street, Cork. Contact details are as follows:

Blarney GAA will only cover the cost of physiotherapy for players referred by the club's doctor (Dr. O'Riordan). Physiotherapy treatments are restricted to a maximum of 3 sessions per referral.

If a player requires more than three physiotherapy sessions, the player must first notify his team manager before approval to return to Dr O’Riordan for additional treatment referral.


PROCEDURE FOR PAYMENT OR REIMBURSEMENT OF MONIES PAID OUT FOR INJURIES ACQUIRED DURING A MATCH / TRAINING SESSION

(A) Players that are referred to Dr. O'Riordan surgery by their Team Manager should not incur any charge; This is covered by Blarney GAA Medical Insurance Scheme for paid up members.

Players that are referred to Hospitals or other Medical Institutions by Dr. O'Riordan should not incur any charge. This is covered by Blarney GAA Medical Insurance Scheme for paid up members provided that Dr. O'Riordan provides a referral letter (essential).

If Dr.O'Riordan is unavailable to provide referral letter for the injured player for attendance at a Hospital or a Medical Institution (MUCC, VHI Swift), Blarney GAA will reimburse cost incurred during the visit on receipt of invoice and provided all protocols have been followed correctly- the invoice may be issued by the Hospital / Medical Institution to the player or to the club secretary.

(B) Prescriptions - All prescriptions costs incurred by the injured player should be initially paid by player / parent and subsequent reimbursment sought from Blarney GAA Medical Injury Scheme.

N.B. Please keep all prescription receipts. Only receipted prescription expenses related to the injury will be reimbursed.


PROCEDURE FOR COMPLETION OF THE GAA INJURY CLAIMS FORM

N.B. All completed Medical Claim forms must be returned to the Medical Claims Officer (Tadhg Hurley) within 14 days.

The player or parent (for underage players) should print off the form and complete the relevant sections. Click here - GAA Claims Injury Form

When the claim form is completed by the injured player or parent of the injured player it should be returned to the club Medical Claims Officer (Tadhg Hurley) who will oversee its submission and processing by the Insurance Company.

All correspondence with the Insurance Company must be directed through the Medical Claims Officer.
